You and the Cost of Newborn Diapers

I’ve always thought that newborn diapers were more cost effective than the other sizes. (If you don’t have kids, when you buy diapers, the larger the size, the fewer diapers you get per package, even though the cost is the same.) Of course, those savings mean nothing if you go through a lot of diapers, which is exactly what we were doing.

Our perfect little child was a pooping and peeing machine, and we were going through diapers like nobody’s business. Actually, it wasn’t just the newborn diapers - we were going through everything. Such a wee little thing, but the baby created more laundry by herself than the rest of the family combined.

I wasn’t naive, I knew having a baby was really expensive. But I had been thinking a little further down the road, things like braces and university. Just how much could a little baby consume and cost? A whole lot, as it turns out.

And now, I’ve become that guy. I’m the guy that clips coupons, not only for newborn diapers, but for anything else that might help offset these added costs of having a new baby. How did this happen? I now put all my coupons in an envelope so that I’m organized when I get to the store.

And I’m also making a list before I go to the grocery store; not only that, but I’m even using the flyers to make my list. The real reason I do this? Not to save money (although that is a plus) or help to get the money for all those newborn diapers. No, it’s more because of the fact that I’ve barely slept in three weeks and I’m liable to get to the store and forget what I went there for in the first place.

And what I’d probably end up with is just more newborn diapers. Packages and packages of newborn diapers, because I know at least that we need those, even if I’ve forgotten everything else we need. So I make my list, and I’ve even gone so far as to actually wait for the flyers to be delivered every week. I go through the flyers, one by one, and make up my list of what I need to get by store so that I know I’m getting all the best deals.

Still, despite the lack of sleep and shock over actual amount having a baby costs, I’m trying to commit every last moment to memory. Because someday very soon (and probably sooner than I think) I’ll come across one of those newborn diapers and be amazed that my child was ever small enough to fit into them. I will hang on to each moment I have with my baby now, while my little child is small enough to still fit into those teeny-tiny newborn diapers.
